What's your favourite area of maths? I personally prefer pure maths - calculus, trigonometry, complex numbers, and other topics that don't have immediate real-world applications. What about you guys?

Newton came up with calculus to solve physics problems. That's the real beauty of it. How else could one derive the elliptical orbit of a planet?

You might mean number theory which is further removed from real world application, or just define math without units such as cm/s or grams - then you have "pure" math.
